I'd say no, The M54 uses an aluminium block and aluminium cylinder head with cast iron cylinder liners. Where as the 1998 has cast iron block and aluminum head. We all know that overheat happens...

start with the two codes that come up first. Reset them see how it goes. Than start asking about some more options.

The DYI included the o2 with the MAF cleaning. (ignore the o2 sensor for now)...

If ebay doesn't work, I bought mine from http://www.bmaparts.com/ they sell Febi for $33 it's 100% identical to others in car and functions perfect doesn't feel too cheap.
