That is correct. Wear goes up initially after a change. I am not sure if that is a universal truth but ever time I have seen it tested that is what happened.

Pull the inspection covers over the plugs....

Pull the inspection covers over the plugs. Leaking valve cover gaskets will soak the plugs and it will smoke.
