Back Window on Convertible

I still have my original top & rear window on my 2002 Z3 roadster.
Before I take it down, I insert a 5 inch foam circular beam so that it folds over a curved object. Works well for me & low cost. ...

If it isn't leaking & the water pump is working, I'd replace the thermostat.
My 2002 Z3 had this problem, but it is cheap & easy to fix.

Thanks for the update. I'll go look at the differential again tomorrow, but the speedometer is still working today. Haven't been able to reproduce failure again.

I had that happen on my 2002 Z3 2.5 liter.
I replaced the thermostat & the problem disappeared.
It's a lot cheaper than replacing the whole cooling system & you can check to see if
the cheap fix...

Don't know what happened, but the problem has dematerialized.
Perhaps it was the onset of cold weather & dampness in the speedo cable.
Don't know, but we'll see if it repeats itself.

When there's no Freon, the compressor doesn't run. That's one possibility.
Check to see if the A/C switch is working too or if there's a fuse blown.

Have you held the key very close to the rear view mirror when pressing the key.
My 2002 has to have the key very near (a foot or two) for it to open the doors sometimes.
Worth a try if you haven't....

I just did the reset on my 2002 Z3 2.5 liter roadster a few days ago. Vintage42's recommendations worked for me.
