Haven't been in there in a while but I recall getting greater access by unbolting the engine mounts and raising the engine an inch or so. Maybe that would give you the access you need?

I put Bilstein HDs in my 540 a couple of years ago, stock springs, and the only complaint I have is that they were a bit stiff in below-freezing weather (less than 20 degrees F) for the first winter....
