You used the 1157 bulb it sounds like. You must use the European lamps in the E34 taillight assemblies, they're VERY sensitive to heat, and the 1157 bulbs are too hot for them. If you want the correct ones, head to the dealer and get a correct set, they aren't too expensive there. These are the part numbers for Sylvania bulbs available at Autozone.
