I almost had to pay over $800+ to fix it, but decided to hold off on it and do some research. I think you're right that the first design might have been "defective" or just a "poorer" design since the new one has more bars on the heatsink for greater surface area and cooling.
Did anyone notice any rips or cracks on the shiny / waxy part on the side of the plug?
