As I recall, BMW lists a specific tool, a long socket with a hole cut out just for this. Unfortunately, that may work for the BMW collar nut but Bilstein's collar nut is 1 mm larger. That was how I got mine installed as well, with a vice grip, an allen key and lots of swearing.

If you're comfortable, you can actually cut a hole out of a long socket to do this, especially if the top collar nut needs to be tighted to torque.
