Look can be deceiving

Now it may be the fact that it is warmer now, not absolutely sure, but hoping.

But it didn't fix my VANOS cold idle issue, oh well.
Look can be deceiving when dealing with car parts...
Your old parts may have looked OK, but functionally they are close the end of their life.
I bet you the whining thing may have been from a worn tensioner/roller.

I can tell you (see my write-up), the WP looked like new but when I applied pressure, the bearing is already worn (there was a play in the pulley); the nroller grease already dried out.

I am surprised your indy told you you need a clutch. The whine from tensioner/roller happens at rest, even without the car moving.

Re: clutch don't worry, my last car E23 (83 735i) the clutch went at 12y and 120K miles.
And it gives warning such as slipping. So I am pretty sure you do not have the clutch problem.

Anyway, now enjoy the drive!
