my record for changing out the water pump (the biggest PITA part) was an hour and a half... from breaking the fan off the pump to Airlifting the system.
yeah... no fun included. just blew thru the whole disassembly and reinstall all at once... nonstop.

your vanos issue is with the $h|t seal BMW uses in there. check the FAQ for the techincal thread on Roadfly about it.
