Your E36's diff can use, in the word of the Pelican Parts Technical Article, a generic transmission gear oil (75W-90 for non-LSD).

What brand to use will be your biggest decision. You'll find other threads about ATF and gear oil brands that border on religion (that I chose to avoid in this thread).
