There is no Vanos issue with 2001 cars that is any different from 2002 or 2003 models. There was a change in 2000 M5s where a mod was made to the Vanos to better hold pressure when the engine is off, and I think cars were retrofitted with this change.

There was a piston ring design change as of 3/00 production for the 2000 model year M5 to reduce oil consumption issues some earlier 2000 model cars experienced. All M5 engines after this date are identical.

Hence 2001-2003 M5s are essentially identical cars excepting the rear airbag issue with 2002 cars and for 2003 you get DVD Navigation.

All 2002's have rear air bags, but they were shipped deactivated. Also, I've read all the vanos data...and I'd still be leery of an 00. Except Martin's S3.
