They are taking a different approach to the same question that MB answered with the R-Class; that is practical utility for a family in a non-SUV/minivan/station-wagon vehicle. But the solution and execution are vastly different between the R-class and 5-er GT. You could argue the MB evolved the mini-van with the R-Class, while BMW evolved the station-wagon with the 5-er GT.
