My 2003 525i has experienced the same problem with the driver side seat cover - the comments in this thread have been extremely helpful. I have some additional comments, however. There is supposed to be a white locking lever on the connector which locks the connector into the rectangular receptacle on the seat control box. Mine is broken off and the receptacle is also broken as shown in bluebee's photos. I am replacing the seat control in mine as one of the switch post sleeves (which the adjustment knobs attach to) has disintegrated and fallen off. I found a used switch at at a reasonable price. I am concerned that the connector will not remain in place without the locking mechanism and am considering using an electrical wire tie to secure the connector. I have also added a nylon sleeve (1/2 inch od, cut to 7/8 inch in length) from the hardware store to a longer forward torx screw to provide extra strength to the seat side cover - time will tell if this is effective.
