I know what you're saying as I thought the same as you. I still own a 2002 330i and now that I've got the 128i the interior of the e46 feels old, not in a bad way, but in a comfortable way. the 128's interior has a nice feel to it as well as a good fit n finish, especially when optioned with the grey poplar wood.
