Purple color means the bulbs are not creating the chemical reactions that produces the light. Inside an HID lamp, there's this chemical called halide. WHen voltage is applied between the two electrodes inside the lamp, a chemical reaction takes place because this element is negatively charged and will react to the positive charge. It's this reaction that produces the light.
