A year ago I had a local independant garage see if they could find the rattling in a can sound when starting my 2003 525i. They said that they had replaced the hydraulic dampener to fix the problem gave me an old hydraulic dampener and charged a very large fee!! The problem was back the next day and they refused to do anything about the fee. I had not found the time to stop working on aircraft engines and work on the BMW.

Yesterday I replaced the water pump, fan clutch and power steering hoses and noticed that the car has spring loaded tensioners for the serpinteen belts NOT a hydraulic tensioner on the belt to the airconditioner pump.

My question is......can the spring loaded unit be replaced by a hydraulic unit and viseversa? It looks like the houseing that holds the heavy spring would have to be replaced in order to have had a hydraulic dampener installed.

Many thanks for you views.

The mechanical spring loaded tensioner is interchangeable with the hydraulic one, but the switch is usually the other way around.
The switch is usually from mechanical to hydraulic but it gives you no benefit besides costing more and requiring a non-BMW additional kit.

Search and you'll find it pretty quickly if you need pictures of it to compare with what the indy put on your car.
