Granted there's a lot more electronics on cars these days but, they also have fail safe mechanisms built in to prevent draining the battery to the point where you can no longer start the vehicle. A malfunctioning component can prevent this fail safe from working correctly and lead to a dead battery. The most common causes I've seen posted here involve communications units such as the Bluetooth module or BMW Assist system. A properly functioning system has no trouble starting the vehicle even after it sits for 30 days or more. Extreme temperatures excluded, of course.
