I'm with CNN...more details as to what exactly is going on would help us help you better. EWS is a "system" of components that are located in various places...and communicate wirelessly with each other. It is not a single component.

So depending on what the problem is...you may get better suggestions on how to go about fixin what may be wrong.

Also, EWS is one of the BMW technologies that has evolved since its introduction. There is EWS which was introduced in 1993...then EWS 2 introduced the transponder chips inside the keys. The e39 (depending on model year/build date) could have EWS 2, EWS 3.2, or EWS 3.3:
