The "serial number" part of the VIN is the last 6 digits (this is the part that is unique to each individual car and is assigned serially as the cars go down the production line). The first 11 digits identify other stuff (see info below):



The "official" model year (regardless of the car's build date) can be identified by the 10th VIN digit in the USA. (This may not be the case in other countries that use a different method of vehicle registration). The alpha characters I, O, Q, U, Z aren't used to prevent confusion with other alpha/numericial digits (1,0,V,2,O, etc). :
  • X - 1999
  • Y - 2000
  • 1 - 2001
  • 2 - 2002
  • 3 - 2003
  • 4 - 2004
  • 5 - 2005
  • 6 - 2006
  • 7 - 2007
  • 8 - 2008
  • 9 - 2009
  • A - 2010
  • B - 2011
  • C - 2012
  • 1 - 2031 (starts back using numerical digits until 2040 when alpha characters will start again)
