Hi, first time posting. Not sure if i'm comparing apples to oranges (e53 vs e70), but I had the dreaded whinning/golf cart noise on my 04 4.4i. After looking through a bunch of forums, I was convinced that it was the alternator so I took it into an indy bmw specialist intending on replacing the alternator. After about 3 hours, I got a call from the mechanic telling me that he had fixed the issue. Turns out, the noise was coming from the deflector pulley which dries out over time. Saved a few hundred $ and the noise is gone! Hope this helps some of you.
