Yeah, these cars are incredible when running fine but they can be absolute nightmares to deal with as you are finding out with the locking issue. We have to remember that during the E34s production, the E34 was an expensive sedan and thus warranted high security additions to the car like the dead bolt feature. As inconvenient as you find it 16+ years after the car was built, it was originally built to protect the original buyer's purchase from thieves and was built to be a solid and very secure vehicle. Do not be upset with the car, just work through it and you will work it out! You definitely won't regret it once you do but be prepared to give a lot of attention to the car depending on the condition it is in. BMWs usually aren't very economical to own but the driving experience generally will make you forget about that.
