To correctly balance a car you are suppose to put weight on the seat that the drivers sits on since the extra 200 or so pounds of the driver changes the cars weight distribution and in turn changing the suspension geometry. Engineers have been doing it for years when aligning any track car. Doing this will get you the most accurate alignment possible. Is it necessary on your x3? no but Im a bit picky when it comes to my vehicles so I make them add weight or add weight myself.
