If you have INPA on a laptop with the appropriate cable, you can read the temperature of the tranny.

If not, you can read it with a multimeter that has a temperature function.

I have done mine at 60 k and recently at 80k miles in my garage. Filter and gaskets were changed both times. It gives me peace of mind.
All e38 should have had this done by now even tough the factory calls for life-time oil. life-time oil is not a lifetime oil. ZF says the fluid should be replaced at 10 years if the fluid is in use.

A fellow e38 owner went to ZF germany and had his transmission serviced there. He was told to change the oil every 50k miles and fluid + filter each 100k.

Personally, I will do my best to keep the transmission in good shape especially since I am always driving in sport/manual mode. I never drive it automatic.
