I think "ugly" is a word people use to describe things they perceive unappealing. It does not mean that the thing in question is in fact that. Quite often, I think, "ugly" is used as a descriptor for a thing that's new or unconventional...the Guggenheim Museum, the Mona Lisa, and the works of the Impressionists were so described by their contemporary critics.
