The German culture is not the same as the American culture. Their personal time is valued higher than money.
Schedules are to be on time without exception. Switzerland is more strict. I believe they might have frustrations with us for even requesting variences from the rule/scheduled appointment times.
I agree with having a plan B. Also we must realize the need to schedule extra time on the ED to avoid this type of dissapointments.

The good news is you have an M3 in good shape and experience no N-Ring incidents. There are stories like that too.
