Mein Auto: wagons
'92 525 wagon: what to look for when buying?

Hi all. The most important thing I've learned about cars is to ask their owners what they like and dislike, and what problems crop up. So I am looking into a '92 525 wagon with 316 KM and a rebuilt motor. I will hopefully look at it this week. I've never owned a BMW (yet). I'm capable of doing significant mechanical repairs.

What should I look for in terms of common wear or breakage, things which go wrong, expensive things which will bite me in the arse, little things which look like big problems but are cheap and easy to fix, etc.

Supposedly the cooling system is a weak point in these cars? I wonder if that's why the rebuilt motor is there.

What OBD system does this model use, I or II? I have a I code reader, so if that's it I can see if there are any codes.

Let me know your thoughts. In the mean time I'm going to search around here and see what I can dig up.

PS I just remembered about the last BMW I looked at. A 2002, probably back around 1980.
