Ok, I think i may have found your problem. I have a spare transmission range switch over here, it is yellow in colour, with a curve on the top kinda like an aerofoil (you can imagine the stick moving over this as you engage), and it has the exact same number of live metal prongs (7) and in the exact same shape that is found in the black plug over in your picture. Obviously, the two are supposed to be plugged into each other.
If your transmission range switch is busted, you won't be able to engage your transmission. Sound like the problem that you have. If that got disconnected, you wouldn't be able to engage your gears at all. That's it.
You may need to pull up the cover around the transmission that we see in the picture, to access your transmission range switch.
Basically, if you see something that looks like its unplugged, look around carefully for its corresponding socket. It probably belongs there unless you're sure it shouldn't or has been disconnected deliberately for some reason.
