How old is the car battery? That could be the problem since the remote still works ("barely"). I assume you do not have comfort access since you have an 05. Therefore, the battery in the remote is not replaceable without cutting the key open and being very skilled to effect a replacement. Ask me how I know! 
My first step would be to have the car battery evaluated at AutoZone, Pep Boys?
