I haven't done any electrical work yet on my BMW but will speak from years of experience with various other vehicles.
What you need is to first find a wire or connector that is switched coincident with the headlights; i.e. it's on when the headlights are on, off when the headlights are off. Best to get a wiring diagram of your car and look on the diagram in the vicinty of the headlights.
Once you've identified a switched source, you can tap into that to trigger a relay which powers the LEDs. Actual power could be tapped from the fuse block or battery connection (and fused!) and run to the relay.
