The N54 is definitely the stronger motor. However, one reason I believe most people think it FEELS stronger is the transmission. Think that the N54 had the 6 speed auto and the N55 is paired with the 8 speeder. The 8 speeder shifts more often and keeps the revs a lot lower than the N54. As a result, the N55 spends a lot of time below 2,000 RPM, and most people think it feels weaker.

Compared to the 6 speed auto, the N54 actually gets a chance to stretch it's legs.
Good point. The 8 speed has its pluses and minuses but it does get you into lower rpm ranges making the engine feel weaker. Mind you, the fuel economy can be very good on the highway.
