Resurrecting an old thread here.
I find these numbers fascinating.
I wonder about the possibility of finding numbers for tourings that are still registered (and assumed to still be on the road). I also wonder if there's a way to know how many of these cars have manual transmissions.
Just for fun, I did a search on cars.com for E39 wagons with a manual transmission. There is currently 1 in the US for sale on cars.com.
