The way i see it for the E39, the pre lci bumper it was a big flop...it's butt ugly. The lci bumper shows a state of elegance and classy feel, while the m bumper is more sport oriented, hence why it's on the m5.
I've seen this other world you speak of once (sadly) and it doesn't look good IMO, the post lci bumper doesn't flow overall with the m5 at all.
Some people do prefer the post lci bumper. I do agree though that M is now just a Marketing tool. "Hey, want some M performance parts for your M5!?"
