There is a physical connection between the lock cylinder and the electronic actuator which is easy to check without removing the door panel. I'd start there...

To remove the key mechanism from the door is quite easy. There is a black rubberized covering inside the door (striker side) that hides an access hole to the retaining screw. This image from a Fanatics thread shows how to access it:
