It is pretty safe, but on rare occasion, I have seen people mess up their VCM so bad, it had to go to the dealer. Of course if you move from coding to flashing firmware on modules, you could brick an ECU. Again, this is rare, and I would not let it discourage you from coding your X3, but I am not going to lie to you and say it is 100% risk free either.
