Yes, I commuted in one of the worst traffic spots in the country. 100+ miles round trip daily, a minimum of 4 hours in the car every single day.
Some gauges are more accurate than others. Some will ride under the empty line, some stop right on it, some have warning lights that come on at the last minute, some have gauges that aren't calibrated right at all.
I don't let it get super low if I'm far away from gas stations, but in my area there's a gas station off every exit every 2 miles if something unexpected comes up.
