The thermostat that I think you're referring to is the automatic transmission thermostat. I had forgotten about that, until you reminded me about it again. Sorry about that. Yes, that's something that gets broken fairly frequently when removing and replacing the expansion tank. If you're careful, you can get away without replacing it, but don't be surprised if you break it.

Check out this kit:

It's a Level 2 kit, assembled with aftermarket parts, and replaces most of the troublesome parts.

Add in this part:

That's the Automatic transmission thermostat. Not a genuine BMW part but, again, it's budget-conscious.
