Check those fuel pump diaphragms...

As mws said, check the fuel pump diaphragms on both sides..my bet is they are
leaking. Fabricate yourself a pentagon-shaped bit and remove the fuel pressure
regulator to check the diaphragms. I haven't found a suitable replacement yet
but the Audi Q7/VW Touraeg (or however you spell that) have a similar design
specced HPFP that sells for $200 or so on Ebay. You may be able to swap or modify
the diaphragm from this pump...I haven't opened one up yet to see. If it works, it'd
be a heck of a lot cheaper than $2500 per pump.

Also might want to consider lubricating your gasoline with an additive to prevent
the pump piston scoring the bore allowing metal shavings to kill your next pump.
