Could someone please tell me what are the steps in the ordering process (from dealer to plant)?
I left a deposit for 2011 x5 on Saturday, Oct. 1. I was told it'll take 6 weeks to build.
Should I expect a phone call, or an email from the dealership/bmwusa with some additional info?
It there a way to know when and if the plant got the correct order/options from my dealer?
How long does it usually take for the order to show up in the bmwusa.com tracking system?
Mine took 3 weeks from order to delivery, but it depends on the slot the dealer has and when it will start being built. Once you put the order in, your sales person should be able to give you a Production Number which you can then login to bmwusa.com setup an account and enter your production number and it will show you your order with all the options to verify and then show you when it will go into production and through the process. You can also call 800-831-1117 and they can give you updates along the way once you have the Production number. Usually you should be able to see it on bmwusa.com within a week of the order and getting the production number, but sometimes the website lags for long periods of time and the 800 number seems more up to date.
Basically they take about a week to build and 1-1.5 weeks to get on a truck and be delivered, so figure 2.5 weeks from the actual start of production date once you have it.
I ordered mine on 9/13. I just found out today by calling the BMW 800 # that my car started production at 12:44pm today and should be completed by next week. Dealer said another 5 days or so to ship it (to Texas), so I guess thats about 5-6 weeks total. The website still says "scheduled for production" as it has since 9/13, so as many members have said here, it generally lags behind what is actually happening.
By the way, BMWNA and my CA have both said I should have the IPOD updates so we'll see. Don't know about the much hyped nifty lights, but the 8TL was not on my build sheet. So excited!
I called BMWUSA; my car is in production now and will be ready by the 18th. The BMWUSA website, however, states "on order" and has wrong colors with correct options. Should I worry about this discrepancy?
No, the website isn't as accurate as the telephone status. The most accurate status would be from your CA on dealerspeed.net, you could probably email your CA and ask for a PDF snapshot of it.
Do a google search on "track BMW production" and there is a massive write-up on how to track your car. I goes down to how to track the boat your car is on if coming from Germany. It explains website inaccuracy ect. It is an amazing read

The missing data will be which production slot YOUR dealer is giving you for YOUR car.
Dealers cannot simply order as many cars as they want- if they could, they'd just sell hundreds a month at 100 profit per car. BMW limits how many 'slots' a dealer can get.
Hence, unless you know what slot the dealer has assigned you, you cannot predict.... "6 weeks" etc, etc, all are predicated on getting an open slot.
+1 on hinsdogg....if there is no production date, then you need to ask the CA what slot they are assigning your car- and saying "BMW decides that" is BS. Ask how many X5s are you allocated in Oct and am I one of them?"
On top of how many cars your dealer is allotted and when your car is put into the queue. Example. I orders my X end of august and told the dealer to push it to Oct production(combo box). I was put early for that dealers alotment. You also have to factor in your options. If you choose items like leather wrapped dash or non-STD colors then it can take longer. If you option an X with priority 1 options then you may get them quicker. My car started production on the 4th and arrived on the lot in Chicagoland area on the 12th.
