You'll need to back out the black cap on the canister until it just clears. This allows the oil to drain back into the sump.

The filter cartridge comes with a new O-ring and washer for the oil pan plug. No need to hog down on the cap - just make sure it's firmly seated in the canister. Most of us use German-made filters, like Mahle or Knecht.

You'll need a 36 mm socket, and a bolt measuring 6x1.0x40 mm. The bolt screws into the side of the canister, and by holding it with your other hand to counteract the torque while removing/replacing the cap prevents damaging the rubber shock mounts.

I installed a magnetic oil drain plug during the oil change. Hopefully it will trap metal shavings over time.
