I own a 1988 635csi. I started it yesterday and let it run for five minutes then it suddenly died. It would not start but when I shot ether it ran for two seconds then died again. I do not want to throw parts at it so where should I start.Bad fuse? bad relay? Please advise
Fuse 11 controls the fuel pump (among other things). Check it. It is the eleventh fuse toward the fender counting from the inboard side of the right-hand fuse row. It's supposed to be a 15 amp fuse.
Check for voltage at the pump itself. If the fuse is good but you have no power to the pump, check the fuel pump relay for function. It should be the relay on the front side (toward the front of the car) of the fuse panel.
If you have voltage to the pump, pressure test the pump anywhere down-stream of the fuel pump itself. Easiest is up on the fuel rail inlet.
