Thought maybe this is a good post to start just to gauge what falls apart on these cars
98 523i touring 207,064kms
In the last week or so;
Replaced sparkplugs - Bosch 4 prong -$105NZD
CVV genuine BMW -$177NZD
Hoses for CVV made my own $10NZD - top hose to order genuine from Autohaus
Oil filter and Shell Helix 15/40W oil - $52NZD
Fronts disks resurfaced to well within spec - $75NZD
Cleaned and polished headlight lenses - elbow grease.
Fixed leak @ power steering hose - elbow grease.
Cleaned K&N - elbow grease
Fixed sticking hood latch - elbow grease
Ran car through 6 month inspection - $43NZD
All is good with the E39.
New wiper blade inserts - dealer only. Aftermarket NFG.
Set of sisal mats from CoCoMats. Perfect fit, good-looking. They have a Velcro-style patch that mates with BMW Velcro buttons to anchor the mats, and prevent sliding.
Replaced my leaking VCG with an OEM one because the aftermarket one I put on after doing the vanos in July still leaked (should've listened to you cn90)
Replaced air filter
Changed oil and oil filter
New spark plugs (OEM NGK)
New timing chain tensioner
New brake fluid
New tensioners and idler pulley
New vanos oil supply hose
fixed my 'leaky' VCG...or so i thought it was......turned out to be the vlv cover having a hairline crack.fixed with a 2 part epoxy and seem to be holding well to date.
Things I have done within the last month
1. Put my Staggared 3-Piece Vellano Wheels on and Rolled rear fenders to take the 275/30/20 rear tires.
2. Changed front and rear brakes/rotors
3. Washed it up nice
I still need to replace one of the rear parking sensors that is not longer working.
Geeee, you guys are good, all I had done is a "to do list for year 2012" and here are the items on the list....those fixed cost more than my car, LOL.
Vano seal+valve cover gaskets,
replace all shocks and control arms,
tires,
Fix the leaking washer fluid bottle
twisted seat, it is the passenger seat, so this will be on the list for a while
Get the extra key
Fix the remote lock issue,
replace PS fluid, and check why the PS pump is puking PS fluid once in a while
And sort out the issue with the "missing" coolant level thing in the coolant expansion tank
Most recent:
New OEM brake lines and fluid
2nd new expansion tank and temp sensor in 20K miles!
2nd new lower left control arm (ball joint AND bushing crapped out after 20K miles)
Changed: oil/filter, trans, diff, PS. New shifter. New fuel filter. F&R Zimmerman coated rotors and Akebono Euro pads. New wiper inserts. Headlight bulbs (2). Put the snows on.
Coming up: CDV delete, bleed the brake and clutch systems.
Picked mine up from the body shop last week. It lived there for 9 weeks, being brought back to life from the crazy hail storm back in April. I have named him Lazarus. Looks as good or better than the pic below.

3 got hit behind drivers side rear door
4 snow tires on my old rims
5 removed all cup holders
6 installed led lights underneath the outside door handle
7 oil change
8 replaced 99% of all lights with led
soonish....
1 sway bars front and rear
2 m5 style mirrors
3 exhaust
4 suspension
5 possibly get CAI
6 sports ecu
Thermostat, waterpump, oil filter housing gasket, VCG, power steer hose clamps, general service - NZ$1300.
Fixed right rear door vapour barrier - $0.
Replaced right front underskirt thingy (with temp sensor in it) - $330.
Replaced cabin filters - $110. Solved "gym sock pong" with mould killer $15.
Experimented with LED AE's - looked stupid... $70. Reverted to stock halo's.
Adjusted park brake - as good as it will get... $0.
Euro shaped plates - a huge rip off...
The ABS module had just been replaced by previous owner, as had the tyres and spark plugs.
To do:
Transmission fluid replace. (no issues though)
Repaint of front end, polish headlights.
Check out suspension components (no issues though)
