Considering M5 vs. new 5-series

I need something bigger than my '01 325i...part of me wants the cushy new car w/ a warranty, but the evil twin wants a beast with more room.

help drag me further to the dark side..

I've trolled Ebay and Autotrader looking for a deal, any other suggestions?

suggestions as to what car to get? Depends on budget, obviously if you can afford an M5 that would be my recommendation, there are also some deals to be had on them as well, and if you could bare with getting a slightly used one the prices come at a pretty big discount, and you won't be the one taking the depreciation hit either. Sounds like you want a bigger car, if it was me I'd either get a M3 sedan or a 335 sedan.

I'm considering the '00-'03 M5, not the new body style. My wife has an '07 328, so I'm familiar with that size, its too small for hauling around the kids and mother-in-law.

(no mother in law jokes needed, lol)

In January I sold my 07-335i 6mt sedan and bought my 02-M5.
During the decision making process I too thought about the whole warranty/service thing.
From a financial stand point, I owned my 335i out right (no loan), and was able to pay cash for the M5. Paying for repairs does not bother me. However, if you will need a loan and are not as set financially, the new car with four years of warranty and service may be a better bet.
As far as my decision, I enjoy my M5 more than I did the 335i.
M wife put the icing on the cake, so to speak, last weekend when riding with me in the M5, she said that she did not miss the 335i in the least.

We just bought an E39. Took it home yesterday. It's a '03 M5. Found it locally from an ad on one of the forums. I've been looking for an '07 or '08 530 or 535 but once I drove the M, it was over. Last year E39 body, almost fully loaded, fast and fun, not abused, great price and the color is perfect..... Carbon Black. To boot, the steep 4 year depreciation is gone and the hit won't be bad at all when were done driving the M5. Win-Win.

That was my thought as well. I could probably pull off a year of free driving, considering the "doom and gloom" on the news driving prices of stuff lower and lower. Sell it again when things bounce back, if I'm tired of it. Who knows.

I don't think you'll ever get "tired " of an M5. Maybe tired if you start spending lots of $ on repairs but not of the car itself.

If I wanted a loan on one, the payment would be a lot less than buying a new 5-series, even with adding a warranty on one. I've got lots of local people who can work on the car for a lot less than the dealership, so its really not "that" tough of a decision. I just need to drive a new 5 again to solidify my decision.

you should go to m5board.com and look at the for sale section. The price is better than ebay in many cases and you get a car with service history from an enthusiast.

So, I was in your position last fall. Had a '98 328i and it was beginning to get a little long in the tooth. I considered both 2008 550i and 535i and an '03 M5. I went with the M5 and have never looked back. Best decision I've made in years. It is an AWESOME car.

Thanks for the advice. I went to the local dealer this weekend and drove a 535, it was really nice, but just not quite what I was looking for. Time to start looking for some M5s to drive.

Once you test drive an M5 you won't look back. It really is a one of a kind. I haven't seen a car yet that I could replace it with. For a resonable price that is.... Good luck in your decision!

The carbon build up was mostly for early model year 2000 cars.
The clutches typically last 50K miles depending on who has been driving the car.
There are guys on m5board.com that have over 100K miles on their original clutches.
I look at it this way, i would rather have the clutch be the weak point in the drive line as opposed to beating up the transmission or rear differential.
The MAF's can be had for around $ 100.00 each if you search around. Those also last approx. 50K miles. Just remember, there are two MAF's on an M5 as compared to one on a 540i.
Other things; the stock rear sway bar brackets tend to break (better ones via aftermarket), front control arm bushings, and brakes are much more expensive than a 540i.

I've got a BMW tech that works on my cars on his off-duty time, so I'm not really worried about any of those items. I'm already envisioning upgrades to the weak spots anyway. I think I'm going to see if I can sell my E46 and start fishing.
