740i Transmission fail safe message

hi there my fellow bmw buddies i am new to the forums so just be a little patient with me i have a 1995 740i with 240000 on the tranny i keep getting this annoying trans fail safe (u know the message ) i took out my engine module by mistake and noticed that it had be tampered with (open) so i took it to the shop and was told that my tranny computer is not talking to my engine computer (what!) another shop told me that was impossible so i took it back to the orignal shop i was then told that there may be an electrical problem with the trans module (stop the madness)can any one point me in the right direction away from this shop that i have been going too to a good one so i can bury this tranny problem!

i could honestly be quite a few things. like your were told, possibly the computer. it could also be as simple as a shift selector switch or wiring. at worst it could be the trans going out.

you will need to take it to a mechanic that actually knows what they are doing. there are a lot of ok mechanics out there, but knowing the ins and outs of BMWs are not quite as simplistic as some other vehicles. a lot of people will try and scam you though so be careful and definately get other opinions!

I've heard of crazy things happening with low battery voltage, so my first reccomendation is to get the charging system checked out, starting with the battery.

I'm sort of in the same position in regards to transmission failure. I've been having issues with my tranny holding gear for the past month, and I'm having that "BMW paranoia" as well.

If your tranny failsafe came on, it should have stored a code in the computer. Unfortunatly, only the dealer and some specific BMW shops will have the round scanner to attach to the connector in the engine compartment to read the codes though. Hopefully it was just a one time thing on your car.

several reasons why transfail safe mode kicks in
1)bad alternator
2) dying battery
U can check those 2 by opening up OBC#7 on your cluster
car idling should be around 12.2v-13.9v
turn engine off but leave key postion 1 ...battery should be 12.0v and higher
3) low transmission fluid.....

4) 99-2001 have ABS/DSC control module that go bad and when they do "Transfailsafe " kicks in
but u hav 1995 so ignore #4

Please tell me this is possible .. Can my car set the time and date on its own. Yesterday i took off the negative battery pole and that resets everything so the time was not set i drove 2 work 2day failsafe came back on after work still on went to friend house spend 1hour leaving and all is fine but the time and date remain not set, so i stoped in a store return some items and wen i start again failsafe didnt come back but most amazingly the time and date was set perfectly and i hope its possible or their is a ghost in my car.

Thanks for taking the time to reply as to what fixed the problem, I'm sure it will help someone later on. Just don't go crazy on any corners, and keep your distance in the rain, and you should be alright without ABS until you get it fixed.

does anyone know how 2 change my front brake pads i have a 1999 735i sport and i think the calipers used on my car is the 750il calipers these are sport looking and big. AM unsure if i should hammer the 2 pins in front of me out or release the four 10mm hex , or it might be alan key bolts.

It has been a while since I changed my brakes, so I don't remember what style caliper BMW used, and I'm not sure if the 750 uses the same style. But whatever you do, do not dissasemble the caliper. Take a good look around the caliper and do the least amount of steps to take the pads out. If there are pins going through the caliper and the pad, take the pins out and the pads should come out once you push the pistons in. If the caliper covers the pads, then there should be two bolts holding the caliper to the caliper bracket that need to come out. Remember that you need to push the caliper pistons in before putting the new pads on the car. You can use a c-clamp or a giant pair of channel locks. And most importantly, DONT FORGET TO PUMP THE BRAKES BEFORE DRIVING THE CAR.

It should be easy to tell if you have 750 brakes in your car once the pads are out. 740 calipers have one piston per caliper while 750 calipers have two.

thank you i checked and my calipers have 2 pistons per side of caliper and the pins are in the front of the caliper i see wat u mean the pins need 2 be punched out and it will release the pads. thanks 4 your quick reply as i went 2 the store 2 day and bought tools 2 disassemble the whole caliper.

I was in the same exact boat you're in... 2001's won't work. The module has to be coded by the dealer, or you can send yours in and have it rebuilt. I have a 2000 e38. I had mine rebuilt at Module Masters. You take it off and mail it to them. It takes like a week... $300.00 with warranty/satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. Much better than the sticker price to replace with a new module. Here's the link to the company: http://www.modulemaster.com/en/index.php

I highly recommend this company and I'm sure others on this forum can vouch for them as well. What a GOOD feeling, everything working right again! hope that helps you out like it did me!
