DISA 0 Ring

Looks like someone has brought forth the answer to the 0 ring seal problem---and it's not from BMW--go figure

I never understood the DISA (never had to yet) but this is what we have in the bestlinks thread on the problem:
- DISA VALVE FLAP BREAKS: the DISA valve flap breaks, sometimes with parts sucked into the intake manifold (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) & recommended parts (1) (2) & brand selection (1)

The DISA system is named rather confusingly in the E39 glossary as:
- DISA = Differential Air Intake Control (multiple definitions)
- DISA = intake runner length tuning mechanism (multiple definitions)

Googling, I find that a rattling tapping sound from the DISA valve can be easily diagnosed without the need for any special tools:

Further googling, I find a new DISA valve goes by a few names & often comes with the o-ring:
- Adjusting Unit with O-Ring for Intake Manifold (DISA Valve) ~$215
- Adjusting Unit for Intake Manifold (DISA Valve) ~$215

And that the o-ring can easily be replaced as a DIY (if you find the o-ring):

So, as with the lower radiator hose thermoswitch o-ring, the hard part is finding a supplier for that simple o-ring. Thanks Poolman for giving us this link. I'm going to add it to the bestlinks along with the thermoswitch o-ring.

Can someone get us the dimensions of this o-ring when they buy a new one?

This is the clearest explanation yet (if it's correct) of what the DISA valve purports to accomplish ...

To be exact, the DISA valve does not change the length of the intake system on the six-cylinder engines from the M52TU onwards - its function is to be open at low speeds, so feeding all six intake pipes together.

At mid-range speeds it closes, seperating the front and rear groups of three cylinders from each other. At higher speeds it opens again, joining the cylinder groups together. It therefore acts like a massive balance pipe which can be closed when required.

The effect of this is to give more mid-range torque without interfering with bottpm and top-end torque.

Is the DISA Valve O-ring unavailable for M54 engines or no longer available in general?

It's listed for M52TU engines as a $2.21 part on RealOEM (part # 11617504543).

It looks like there is no part number for the M54 engine in Realoem.
But that doesn't mean there isn't a similar part that BMW sells that we just don't know the cross reference to.

For example, the #4 o-ring below is an exact replacement for the lower radiator hose thermoswitch o-ring (which itself doesn't have a part number).

Maybe we can find a similar o-ring in the BMW catalogue for this DISA valve (aka #7 Adjuster Unit).

Does anyone know the size of this DISA Adjuster Valve o-ring?

Here is the link on realoem for my M54 engine.

Realoem clearly lists two different o-rings:

You know Poolman, if you ever want to replace an OEM o-ring on your car with a better one, speced out by YOU. McMaster.com sell a complete line of SAE and metric o-rings (and in all materials).

For example, I already figured out which VANOS seals to buy from them (should Beisan Systems ever stop doing business).

To add value, I just updated the bestlinks line on DISA to the following (to include Poolman's new information):

What we need now is:

• What size is the DISA valve o-ring?
• What material is best for the DISA valve o-ring?

I'm thinking that this 0 ring on Ebay is for the m54 engines that didn't come with an 0 ring--I made a gasket to fit and works fine for me--just thought someone might not want the trouble to do that--hadn't thought about it but Fastenal sells all sorts of 0 rings and has them in stock--next time mines off the car I'm gonna check and see if they might have the size that will do the job and post that back here as well.

dealer DO NOT sell M54 o-rings for DISA ( had the same question recently )

Or when you buy 2, just put one in an envelope and send it to bluebee. She will take a very very precise measurement :P Then she will send it back...I think...haha.

Me and 2 other members from Bfc ordered those DISA O-rings from e-bay - the linky posted by Poolman. They never arrived (yet) but the wait time already passed 2 weeks. It seems it's a scam....

I ordered a replacement O-ring for my M52TU DISA valve; $2.50 from Pelican with the part # cited in post #7. I'll measure it when it gets here in the next day or so.

Is the O-ring on M54 DISA units just an O-ring or more complicated? Has anyone measured that one?

Technically, there is no O-Ring on the M54 DISA units... and that's why there is not one shown on the realoem diagrams. The sealing is done via a built-in "lip" on the base of the unit that mimics an o-ring. Yes, you can gouge out the old sealing to uncover the grove that a normal o-ring can be fitted into, but you have to wonder why BMW made it the way they did, why it's rectangular, and the original seal is moulded and "glued" into place.

Also, and a big assumption here - the reason the DISA units may not have a traditional o-ring fitted, is, what might happen when it wears, or is mis-fitted, and gets sucked down the intake manifold and into the motor?

Putting an o-ring onto an old worn unit might be a bit of a risk perhaps.

Looks like that ebay guy is selling the same O ring for every DISA-equipped 6-cyl BMW on the market. Are they all red?

1). I ordered 2 of the DISA o-rings from the link on eBay (above) back on 2/2/11...I plan on seeing if it will fit my 525 DISA.

2). I believe it will fit, very curious. Disappointed by JDM...but they did finally send me an email and let me know, "It's on the way."

3). I am VERY curious about part # above 11617504543 to see if it would fit...it SEEMS that inded it would as Realoem shows that 11617504543 fits:
