Upgrade from 550i to an M5, should I?
Got the itch to get a 'new' ride. Considering upgrading to an m5 to be used a daily driver. Should I do that considering lower MPG and increasing gas prices? Is going for a new 550i a better choice. All comments welcome.

To me making the switch has nothing to do with the gas but everything to do with being part of the ///M club. once in it you will know what im talking about.

yeah but i can join the ///M club by buying an M3 vert as a second/weekend car, the question is really, is an M5 usable daily driver or am I just silly for considering using it that way?

I am a bit torn, considering f10 550 or e60 M5. I feel like 550i M sport looks great but i dont like the wheel gap, concerned with early run model issues and also something silly like the fact that the seats dont have bolster adjustments which i really like in my e60. The m5 is awesome but a v10 in a rising gas price trend with a long commute, it doesnt make sense plus it is now an outdated model, thus I am all over the place. However m5 is legendary and could be called the best 4dr in the wolrd, albeit Panamara will now give it a run
Maybe a Honda Accord is the solution. :d

Having said that i take it you realize the price difference between an 06/07/08 M5 and f10 550 where the M5 is in some cases half the price of f10. Good luck. |

As one of those former 550 and now M5 owners (who edwardtt10022 might be referring to), I will say that for me, the 550 was a better car. My commute is 0-30-0 or if I take the other way, 0-40-0 and here in the Chicago area, the 550 was just better. Mostly for the torque - the M5 really needs to be wound out in order to get the power going. Getting 9-10 mpg does not help either (the 550 got 13.5).
I still don't regret it, but I will admit, the new 550 is on my M5 replacement list (as is the 535, X5 35i, 335xi).

Seriously?...if u can upgrade to the ///M5, gas shouldn't be a deal breaker, IMO.

I never understand threads like this, cars like an M5 are emotional purchases - of course it makes no rational sense.
Whether you buy one or not depends solely on your willingness to pay the increased costs all around and your need to scratch an emotional itch - nothing any B'fest member has to say really matters. ![]() Including me

Ive had my M5 now for a week, amazing car. Upgrade if you can afford the gas. All you in the US are lucky, it costs me over $130 for a tank now

IMO if you concerned about gas mileage then you are not ready for M5. I would go for 550. I think if you have even smallest doubt about getting M5 then don't get it just yet. Leave yourself a room for upgrade in the future.
