Wind Noise at aroun 65 MPH - anyone else?
I have a semi-new X3 35i and have always had wind noise (a high whistle) sound when I hit about 65mph on the freeway and it is really noticeable around 70mph. It's loud enough that i have to turn up the music to drown it out -- listening to spoken word audio is too annoying.
I finally brought the car in for service and asked them to check it out and they said that it is due to wind going over the mirrors and that all of the models have that. I find that hard to believe that BMW would put out a car that whistles at freeway speeds. So I thought I'd check with the forum to see if anyone else has that problem. Thanks in advance Colin |

This is one of my main concerns of the BMW and the reason I haven't pulled the trigger. I like a quiet cabin and there was quite a bit of wind noise when I test drove.

I still love my X3 - it is my favorite of all the BMWs I have owned (2 3 series prior to this) but that one defect is kind of annoying. I was hoping it was a misplaced piece of rubber or something that could be trimmed.
I still find it surprising that they would do release a design that isn't designed to go fast

My 28i does not do that at all. Actually very quiet inside the cabin. I would re-question them again.

But that would make the third time the OP has questioned them! Oh, never mind...

Just test drove the 28xi and did not notice any wind noise even when cruising at high speeds on the freeway.

I just drove one again today and this one had no noise. So it's not an across the board thing. I am building mine tonight after trying the Evoque and Q5

No wind noise from my 3.0D, just some tyre noise from the Pirelli RFTs.

Now that my tyres have bedded in they are quiet and I can hear wind noise now (too much tyre noise previously). It's not loud but it is louder than it should be.

Had the same problem, noise passenger side. Dealer thought it was in the engine compartment, replaced some gaskets. Did not work. took it in again and they were unable to fix. The third time they would not give it back to us until the problem was fixed, got a 535i as a loaner. Two days later it was fixed. They said it was the gasket or fitting in the passenger mirror. BTW mine id a '11 28i.

My X3 is 3 months old. Wind noise from drivers door at speeds over 60 but only if there are crosswinds!

My 06 x3 has alot less wind noise (practically nothing) than my 2011 x3 I was shocked. Maybe build quality? The 06 was built in Austria the 2011 in the US Never thought I'd have GM and Dodge issues on a $70,000 dollar suv

Wind noise usually indicates poorly fitted seals. Get them replaced!

I have an appointment with my dealer on Friday. I'm trying to make sure I'm not being paranoid due to reading problems on forums but when I analyse the noise more I feel that needing to raise my voice above the wind noise isn't right. Also when passing other vehicles it sounds like they are driving on wet road, I hear the noise from their tyres more then I'd expect. None of this is terrible but it's not as I would expect either.

I'm just back from the dealer where we test drove my X3 checking for wind noise. My tester could hear wind noise "in stereo" from both mirrors. When we got back to the garage he found a note (TSB?) on production up to 15th July 2011 re the insulation inside the triangle where the mirrors attach to the door needs replacing.
My car's build date is 27th July so they can't do the work automatically.....instead they are raising a PUMA case and will get back to me on Monday. I'm optimistic this will be resolved as they seem to have a fix, it may just be that BMW weren't too accurate with the build dates of cars included in the TSB. |

BMW (not the dealer) conclude it's normal for the car. Today I'm writing to the BMW UK MD, I'm not convinced it's normal to hear wind noise, traffic noise, people talking, car stereos (other cars) and water noise (driving on wet roads).

Wind Noise
See the other (later) thread in this forum on same subject. They are pointing to a seal around the rear view mirror and/or the door seals. We have a late March 2011 X3 with about 17K miles on the clock now, no excessive wind noise. The most predominate noise source seems to be the Pirelli P7 all season tires but I wouldn't say that it is excessive.
