Wind Noise In Cabin - X3

I have an April 2011 built X3, 35 Xi. From the time I took delivery of the car, I felt that the cabin was not quiet and I could hear the road/wind noise.

I came across a post in this forum, which said this was a know issue in X3s manufactured before June of 2011.

It is apparently due to a leaky mirror gasket. I took the car to the dealer yesterday and I was told that there was a bulleting on this. But they did not have any parts becasuse it is such a common occurence.

Did any of you get yours fixed? And did it make the cabin quieter?

Thanks.

Mine is just outside the build dates for the bad gaskets. They tried adding more insulation where the mirrors are attached but I still have wind noise and hear the traffic as though it's a wet day (when it is in fact dry). It has to be the door seals. I'm still investigating with the dealer.

If anybody has documentation on this "known issue", please post. The only minor issue that I have had with my X3 (built last week of Jan) is the wind noise. They replaced the seals on the door which helped, but did not eliminate the noise. My dealer's shop had minimal experience with the X3 when they did the work, so I am hoping that something more conclusive is available now.

Thanks in advance!

Still trying to track mine down. Improving the insulation where the mirrors meet the door did not help on mine, have they checked this on your car?

It is annoying to have wind/road noise more than even my old Honda Accord, and I paid $55K for the car..

I am still waiting for the dealership to call me back, and to fix the mirror seals when the part comes in. I will update once this happens.

It looks like poor German Engineering is to be blamed? [Mal-aligned doors, shoddy rubber for the glass panel? ill fittting mirror gasket?].

Or, it could be the engineering was flawless. But the execution of same was improper

Unless the engineers purposely called for shoddy parts

X3 is a fantastic car, I love it. It is a shame that there is wind noice. I am not able to figure it out where it comes from. For me it appears to come from the doors, but the recall/fix bulleting says mirror seals?

In any case, reading the German web site, the Germans are having the same issue and have come up with all of the above possible issues that may be causing the wind noise.

Well, engineering may be good, but tooling to make the car, is not great..

I guess it still counts against BMW's quality control.

I want my X3 fixed. It is a great car.

Yes, I was just making a fine point. Maybe too fine. But I d rove one today and that seemed fine. I wish you luck with your wind noise. Quietness is one of the reasons I like BMW. Even my 2005 is generally quiet.

I think you will find the answer. Just keep hanging around here and bugging the dealer

Wind noise - Flex

Hi

I am also waiting on the part. They are saying one part is here the other one has to come from Germany.

Did they say which part is defective?

Thanks.

Replacing the mirror seals did help. But did not eleminate the problem.

I am thoroughly disappointed with the quality control/build of BMWs. I had the same issue with my 2012 5 series. After sealing the mirror gasket the noise improved, but the X3 did not improve to the extent the 5 series did.

No matter what, there is cabin noise in BMW X3 and 5 series.

I can not speak for other models.

It is a nice car, great engine etc.. but cabin wind noise is thoroughly disappointing.

When I buy my next car, I will think twice about going for a Bimmer unfortunately..

I still get wind noise, traffic noise and water noise from the tyres. So far no clues on what it is. The sound is getting in somewhere or worse than that - everywhere.

Agree 100%

I agree 100%.

I have a question for you. Is this your first BMW?

I think first time BMW buyers are the ones that see the qualitative difference in the cabin noise compared to previous BMW users, who are perhaps accoustomed to this noise?

I just drove a new 2012 28i on the freeway for 120 miles and no wind noise. It was as quite as my 2009 x3 with a slightly more comfy ride. I also noticed less shift lag than my 2009 when in normal driving mode.

Too bad

I have had wind noise from the day I took delivery of the X3. My 5 series did not have wind noise initially. But with in a month there was wind noise in the 5 series [now fixed/better due to repair by dealer].

I also test drove a 2012 X3. The wind noise is present but is less noticeable compared to the 2011 X3 or rather my X3.

I've contacted the UK MD (his office, I doubt he's seen my email). The UK National Service Manager will be involved now but unless there's a fault with the car I doubt anything can be done. Here's a list of my concerns:

1) Wind noise from about 60 mph, it sounds like the car is being driven on a blustery day even in still conditions. This noise almost certainly emanates from the large mirrors but it should not enter the cabin.

2) Traffic noise - other vehicles, particularly on the motorway, can be heard loudly. The level of traffic noise is commensurate with wet weather even though the road is dry.

3) External noises such as people talking, passing trucks and car stereos are at a level I would expect from a convertible with soft top (ie not a metal roof).

4) When driving on local roads at say 30 mph in the wet I can hear the water sloshing from the tyres. I'm well aware the RFTs tend to be more noisy than normal tyres but this is not tyre noise per se. Our Mini One is far quieter on wet roads that the X3.

Unfortunately I agree

I agree 100% with your problems.

I have the same. Is it just our cars or do all X3 owners have it and are immune to it?

I have now heard back from Customer Services following my writing to the BMW UK MD.

I am told that the noise level in the cabin is determined to be a characteristic of the vehicle and that BMW Germany have advised that no modifications will be released for my vehicle, as they believe that no fault is present on my vehicle.

My expectations are clearly in advance of what BMW believe they should be. BMW seem happy with the the X3 being noisier than other similar vehicles.
