The two companies are so different in terms of the end product they produce. I for one am happy about this partnership. I think BMW can learn a lot about reliability, simplicity and manufacturing precision from Toyota, and TM could really learn a lot about driver engagement and emotional involvement in design.

Makes sense, finally Toyota broke down and decided to just buy the best diesels on the market. Japanese automakers have struggled a bit in the European market because their diesels aren't as competitive as their counterparts from European automakers.
And it would be great if BMW could learn from Toyota, a few tricks on battery management

This could be a big win for BMW. They get to sell more motors AND they get access to Toyota's battery intellectual property. -- The two companies don't compete here. I've never heard of anyone cross shopping even against MINI.
The BMW motors will let Toyota build diesel cars that compete with the Golf and Focus. I'm a little surprised Toyota didn't go with Fiat JTD diesels. Fiat makes a full range of excellent diesels starting at 75 PS 1.25L and going up to at least a 170PS 2.0L Alfa Romeo motor. BMWs motors are very good but BMW at present doesn't have a diesel smaller than the 2.0L N47. Lowest output is 116HP. Unless BMW has a new diesel, the 1.6L is the shared BMW/PSA MINI engine. Lowest tune is 90HP. The 112HP tune has identical CO2 emissions. Fiat builds the 1.25L motor in 75PS and 90PS. VW have a very economical 1.2L 75PS diesel. In small economy cars, Toyota might still find themselves at a disadvantage at 90HP and have no offerings at the bottom end of the range. Last edited by Andrew*Debbie; 12-03-2011 at 01:14 AM. |

funny. I always thought the "uber car" would be toyota electronics technology and BMW suspension, engine and driver excitement.
or more broadly, japanese technology with german engineering. diesel hybrid? BMW i Series? very interesting.
