E34 M30/M50 Engine Swap

Hi Guys.. I have a BMW E34 1989 530i with an M30 Engine and an Automatic transmission. I want to swap my engine with a newer engine of a 525i 1994 (M50 24V engine). I have the full wiring harness along with the computers of both engines. Is this feasible? If yes, what things do I have to take into consideration? I am worried about the wiring harness the most. Any help or feedback would be highly appreciated...

Some things here need clarification.
A 530 has an M60b30 V8, are you sure it's a 530?
The M30 is the last "big six" meaning it's the 3.5L straight six which would be a 535i.
It'd be easier to swap an M30 with an M50 than an M60 with an M50. I hope you mean M30 and 535i which is what I believe.

Some things:
1) wiring harness and computer shouldn't be an issue as long as they're the right ones and you know where it all goes.
2) I do not know if the automatic out of your M30 car will match up to an M50, you'll need to look into that. If you do need a tranny, do yourself a favor and make it a manual as they are more desirable in the resale market.
3) obviously make sure the motor you're putting in is good and solid. I've heard people put engines in and blow a HG or spin a bearing shortly there after.

Also, what will you be doing with the M30? Is there anything wrong with it?

Thanks for your reply.

1- Well I am sure that it is a 1989 530i with 3.0 L V6 engine and not V8. I attached a photo of the engine.

2- I still did not have time to compare the wiring harness compatibility of the two engines. I don't want to end up cutting wires and researching about each pin of the harness to make it fit to the vehicle.

3- I think I will take your advice and swap the automatic transmission with a manual one to be on the safe side ( I already have the M50 engine with a manual tranny attached)

4- I had the M50 engine condition checked by an expert. It is excellent.

5- The M30 engine is still running, but it got problems. It needs some fine tuning with respect to the fuel injectors and the valves. In addition, the oil takes around 10 seconds to circulate in the engine after every morning start up. I think I will just put the M30 engine aside if I manage to fit the M50 engine in. Otherwise, I will have to rebuild it.

6- I am new to the website, so how do I start a project thread?

To confirm what Joe said, and unless I really missing something here, that picture is the M30 engine which is a 3.0 liter, in-line six cylinder engine. It was in the 535. The 530 had the M60, 3.0 liter V-8.

Good luck with your engine swap. To post a build thread, just simply start a new thread (title it how you like but "engine swap build" or something to that effect would work well) and include lots and lots of pictures and keep it updated every so often.

I did some research on the engine that I currently have and below is a quote from Wikipedia

"The six-cylinder E34 530i was available in Europe starting in 1988 but it never arrived in North America. It had a M30B30 3.0-liter inline-6 engine producing 188 bhp (140 kW). This European version of the 530i was discontinued in 1990. In 1992, a new eight-cylinder 530i model was introduced in Europe, later arriving in North America in 1994. Replacing the 535i, it had the new M60, 32-valve DOHC 3.0-liter V8 engine producing 218 bhp (163 kW). It was also offered in a touring version."

Anyway, are you telling me that the M50 will easily replace the engine of my vehicle where the only thing I should worry about is the tranny??? Thanks again for your support. Below are two photos of the old engine and the one I am planning to install.

I will post a lot of pictures of my E34 for you guys as this is a project car that I have been working on since quite some time, I rebuilt the whole vehicle.

I think the engine you have in your car at present is more powerful and more of a work horse than the one you want to swap with. Why not invest in some overhaul on the one that is in there now. I could be wrong about that as I am no expert on E34 engines ??? But in my opinion, just put in the work on the M30. It is a great motor :o))

Fuel economy might be a consideration, but may be a wash, cnsidering the hassle of a swap.

I love my 3.5, and I think it is more spirited than the M50 I had in the 525.

I would keep it stock, especially since it is a Euro car.

If you want an M50, sell the 535 and get a 525i. You'll be getting a slower car regardless of which route you go.

Guys, I already have the two motors, and it is a 530 not a 535i. Yesterday, I was checking the car to check how would I fit the engine and apparently, I have tremendous work to do. I have to change a lot of other parts for the new engine like the fuel pump and the data collector plug and a lot others in addition to the wiring harness from the engine room to the interior dashboard... So I was like re-considering my decision. And now after I read your comments, I am confused of whether to put the M50 engine in or work out the M30 and keep it in place...

If it's an '89 and has an M30, it's a 535, not a 530. The 530 has the M60B30 3.0l V8.

Gravik, It is a European car so it is a 530 M30B30 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with188 bhp. We had the same debate earlier in this thread. Check it out :-)

Well I don't care about fuel consumption. All what I want is a smooth and fast vehicle and it is going to be a real workshop to have the M50 installed. Therefore, I am thinking of fixing my M30 engine and put it in a test period. What do you think?

FWIW, I think that is the best option. The M30 is a smooth engine and more powerful than the M50. Plus, it's always best to stick with the engine that came in the car if possible. Of course, swaps are possible and done frequently, but switching from one series of engine to another can sprout some real headaches.

Ok Guys. I think you are right. I am convinced to keep it original and as it is. I will fix the M30 engine and will show you the final pictures of the car when it is ready to roll. And I will post some photos too through out the project. I have been working on this E34 for five months now, and this is the final step to do, in addition to adding a nice set of new wheels and rims. As for the shipment, I am sorry but I don't think I will sell it right now. I will keep the M50 as a backup for now.

Note: A million thanks for you guys. I am new to this website and I am already addicted to it. I appreciate your support a lot. Thanks again!

Hello again guys. I finally took my decision and began to work with my M30 engine, so far I am dealing with 3 problems in the engine:

1- Oil filter within the oil chamber at the bottom of the engine is almost completely blocked with dirt and some black oil residues, causing the oil not to quickly reach the engine at morning start-up (The oil signal on the dashboard keeps on after the engines starts and the engine generates a weird and loud sound for about 5 seconds, then things go back to normal). I have to clean it and put it back in place

2- The fuel injectors need to be either cleaned or replaced

3- The valves need to be fine tuned.


Will keep you posted with the results...

When was the last time / how often do you change your oil?!

Clean that all up and do an oil and filter change, and maintain the service on it. It sounds like it was neglected a bit

Not just neglected a bit, I would rather say extremely neglected. I bought the car from a guy who knows nothing but to start the engine and drive. From how the filter looks like, I bet that this guy drove over than 10,000 KM without changing the engine oil. I will post some photos as soon as I shoot some.

Just to make things clear, I just bought this car around 6 months ago and I have been working with it ever since. As I said earlier, it is a project car and I have never been maintaining it before. I was shocked and nervous when I discovered how much the previous owner "tortured" his E34. It is a totally different vehicle now. I still need like a couple of weeks to finish every thing and roll it down the street...

Dear All
I started to work on my M30 engine. I will be cleaning the oil filter within the oil chamber as a first step. I removed the engine from the vehicle to fix the paint underneath. Here are some photos of how things look like so far.
