F30 328i Damage (Large Pics)

I got the full clear bra for the hood, fenders, front bumper and mirrors. In addition, I got it tinted. All in all, they did an excellent job. The clear bra is very hard to see even when close being that there are no lines. However, when I picked up the vehicle, they told me they saw some damage on the Right Rear B Pillar. It was not noted/seen/known during the inspection when we did a walk around when I brought the vehicle in for my appointment. Do you think this damage was caused by the window tinting? You have to look close to see it, but when you see it you can see there is damage. What could have caused this? Covered by warranty or damage by the window tinting company? Thoughts?

looks like your tinter slipped when he was trimming the film. the tint is laid onto the outside of the glass, usually held on with water. the tinter then trims it, using the weather stripping as a guide. then he peels the release, spritzes it with a water with a touch a soap, and applies it to the inside of the glass.

those look like razor marks from when the film was trimmed.

Why would they complete a tint job over a damaged section of the car?!

Sounds like they did it personally....

What do you mean (please explain)? That section, the B Pillar, is not covered with any sort of tint. That part was noted after the window tint job was complete. They pointed it out to me and said, "It looks like you have some damage on your car...I just wanted to point it out to you."

To cut/size tint, they normally lay the film on the outside of the glass to get a template. They trim away the excess with a razor and then take the cut film inside the car and apply it to the window. It clearly looks like they slipped and scratched the trim with a razor when doing this. Just because he pointed it out to you doesn't mean that they didn't do it. Take it back and ask to see a manager. It's very very likely they did it.

Absolutely this.

I've had the same type thing happen to me, one of the shops newer techs slipped and cut the weather strip.

They apologized and said they would pay to have it fixed.

If it wasn't noted on the inspection when you dropped the car off at the tint shop, but it was there when you picked the car up, then it's on the tint shop to take care of it. Even if they might not have done it, it's their screw up for not noting it on the inspection. Those inspections are done to protect both them and you - they should be examining the car as thoroughly as you are to make sure they don't get stuck paying to fix damage they don't cause.

It is not bad; they supply very high quality glass.

It is a Chinese company. This upsets xenophobes.

They already handed over the xenophobe card when they bought the import.

Would you buy your BMW if BMW started to produce the whole 3er from China and exported to the USA?

Physically cutting window film is so 1995...

If the shop is saying that they are 100% "razor free" that will mean that they use a plotter -I would not take my car to a window shop without a plotter, but that's me.

My wild guess is that the B-pillar trim crack could have been created by applying too much heat (using a blower) to force-cure that corner of the tint. If the window shop is saying that they can work something out then I would offer to split the cost of the OEM replacement and be done with the drama.

Unless you have a very close relationship with your local dealer, having this replaced under warranty could be difficult. They can always blame the window shop -I would do it if I were the dealer, for sure.

I had a service appointment today with BMW and they looked over the damage/cracking/peeling, etc. That they covered it under warranty.

OP you did an initial walk around w the tint shop prior to them doing any work (seems so from your post)????

And the damage wasn't there/spotted?

They're/tint shop is on the hook for the damage.

How'd you pay (AMEX)? A cc would honor a dispute like that if they don't step up.
